ProTip: Tricks Are Just Tricks
esbueno: I had lunch with some friends last week.  The discussion topics varied, and at some point someone mentioned the word, tricks, and it got me thinking.  I don’t know how long the trend of “X ways to do something really cool in CSS/XHTML/JS” has been going on, but there seems to be no end in sight. Here is the thing.  While it’s fun to learn the latest way to vertically center a div on a...

“Think you’re tough? Try designing & developing production software. It’s...”
– Jeff Rock Buzz Anderson: So true. Update: Since someone seems to have taken issue with this statement, let me add: I don’t think either Jeff or I intended it as a literal comparison of the relative difficulty of triathalons and software development. Shipping a complex app as a lone developer...

Digg Just Hijacked Your Twitter Links →
marco: Digg has apparently been a URL-shortener recently, but they’ve just angered a lot of people by changing the behavior of their shortened URLs to redirect visitors to a Digg page instead of the typical and expected link-shortener behavior of redirecting to the target page. Shorteners are convenient, but they create a number of significant problems such as this. Do you trust that shortener...

The Anatomy Of The Twitter Attack →
After reading how Twitter was compromised, I’m glad I have different passwords for different things and a custom secret question and answer that can’t be googled. Just need to get around to changing my passwords more frequently.

Don’t offer $50 for your favorite feature →
I bet every Mac and iPhone developer (and probably some Windows developers too) has heard this at least once, if not dozens of times, from someone who uses their software: “I will PayPal you $50 right now if you will add this feature for me.” Note to world: don’t do that! It’s actually a little bit insulting.

iPhone 3GS Overview (from an E71 user)
It’s been five days since I got an iPhone 3GS and here are just some quick thoughts. Things I like: The caller photo is BIG. The mobile web experience is a whole lot better (I think I’m gonna use way more data that I used to consume with the E71). Calendar syncs well with my Google Calendar, which is synced to my iCal. Tethering is very simple, both via Bluetooth or USB cable. ...

Digg and IE6 | Just What I Would Have Guessed →
esbueno: Digg did an informal survey on their IE6 users.  The results were right along the lines of what I would have guessed.  IE6 users are mostly corporate and therefore do not have the ability to upgrade browsers even if they wanted to. Our complaint with IE6 should not be with the users, but with the IT professionals who do not prompt their corporations to upgrade to a more secure and...

What Makes You A Better Web Developer - Doing
This has been mostly true for me. I wouldn’t have expanded my skillset if I didn’t try to do things that I previously thought was complex or complicated. And there are times that the complications are restrictions on what you can do and use on a project. To overcome the complications, I do some research and end up finding new and most of the time better ways to do things. I...

The CrunchPad: How different would the world be?
marco: Fusion Garage, the soon-to-be-subsidiary of TechCrunch that’s building the OS for the CrunchPad, has a comically ridiculous motto: What if the browser could boot without an OS? How different would the world be? I’ll try to answer this question. Technically, they’re probably just bundling a minimal, fast-booting OS (with a fast-booting BIOS, presumably, that can quickly wake from...

Friday Futon - Pointing And Smiling With A Cell...
esbueno: There is something about pointing and smiling while holding a cell that just screams - bad-ass! I’ve tried it a few times myself, you know, just to practice. I had trouble with the smiling and holding the cell at the same time. That takes some serious talent. When I finally mastered that, I took it public. Most people I pointed at responded like there was food on their face, or a...
